Workplace wellbeing is everywhere. So why are stress, burnout, poor communication and disengagement still such major problems?
Organisations have invested in wellbeing programmes, resilience training, mindfulness, mental-health awareness and employee support. These initiatives have value… but perhaps we’re missing something.
Workplace wellbeing cannot simply be something an organisation offers. It needs to become part of how people think, communicate, behave and work together.
The problem isn’t always the programme
A wellbeing app cannot repair consistently poor communication.
A mindfulness session cannot resolve a workplace where people are afraid to speak.
And resilience training should never become a way of telling employees to simply cope better with an unhealthy working environment.
But organisations are also made up of individuals and every conversation, reaction, assumption and decision contributes to workplace culture.
So lasting change needs to work from both directions.
The organisation creates the environment.
The individual influences what happens within it.
Think. Feel. Respond.
Imagine two employees receiving exactly the same feedback.
One thinks:
“That’s useful. I know what I need to improve.”
The other thinks:
“They don’t think I’m good enough.”
Same event. Completely different emotional response.
What we think influences how we feel.
How we feel can influence how we respond.
And how we respond affects the people around us.
Multiply those interactions across an organisation every working day and something much bigger emerges:
Workplace culture.
This is why effective workplace wellbeing needs to go deeper than occasional initiatives.
People need opportunities to understand their own patterns, recognise emotional triggers, communicate more effectively, establish healthier boundaries and develop the ability to respond rather than simply react.
A different approach to workplace wellbeing
